A Celebration of Afrikaans Music, Culture and Live Entertainment

From an unexpected street-side discovery to becoming one of Afrikaans music’s recognisable contemporary voices, Refentse Morake’s journey is a story of raw talent, passion and the power of music to bring people together.

Born from humble beginnings in Vereeniging, Refentse was just 17 when his musical talent captured the attention of Cecilia Marchionna, affectionately known as Aunt Kleintjie. After discovering him singing and playing guitar on a pavement in Unitaspark, she recorded a video of his performance and shared it on Facebook. What seemed like a simple moment soon became a life-changing breakthrough, attracting tens of thousands of views within days and introducing his remarkable talent to a much wider audience.

In 2015, another defining moment followed at the KKNK in Oudtshoorn, where Refentse’s path crossed with his musical inspiration, Karen Zoid. The encounter opened doors to the music industry and helped set the stage for his professional career.

His debut album, My Hart Bly in ’n Language, released in 2016, followed by By My Venster in 2017, marked important milestones in his evolution as an artist. His story reflects the growing influence of a new generation of Afrikaans musicians who honour the language and its musical heritage while bringing their own voices, perspectives and energy to the stage.
