Connecting With The Community
‘Reduce, reuse and recycle’ is the mantra to which The Palace of the Lost City continues to uphold in its efforts to support youth leadership programmes in the community. Recognising that the lifespan of bed linen, gowns and chair covers can be extended beyond their use, The Palace has donated the items – worth just under R230 000 – to the Segaetsho Cultural Village, located at Sun City Resort.
Having recently opened under the management of Thuto Legwale, the cultural village offers guests an array of authentic African activities and also works in conjunction with NGO Ska-Wara which runs several youth development programmes in villages surrounding Sun City. These include Moruleng, Ledig, Mahobieskraal, Phatsima and even as far as Phokeng.
In line with its socio-economic development mandate to support Sun City youth development, the 209 gowns, 36 pillowcases and 1 038 chair covers will be re-imagined by youths who reside in the community. The donated gowns will be remade into royal robes decorated with African motifs; the chair covers transformed into beautiful dresses and tops, and the pillowcases converted into luxury laundry baskets which will be brought back to The Palace for use in its guest bathrooms. Profits made from the sale of the repurposed items will be handed over to Ska-Wara to support further production on garments and other youth development initiatives.
“We’re delighted to support Sun City’s youth development programme with these luxury items. This donation aligns with our focus on supporting the development of the youth in nearby communities as well as our sustainability goals which emphasise resource efficiency by repurposing materials where possible. We are thrilled that we’re able to contribute towards the betterment of young people in our community and look forward to seeing how our hotel items will be transformed,” says Caron van Rooyen, Hotel Manager at The Palace.
A very optimistic Legwale concludes: “We would also like to thank The Palace and Sun City for supporting our youth development initiative; we’ve been working relentlessly on the dream of making Segaetsho Cultural Village and Ska-Wara a success. These youth empowerment programmes are already transforming lives.”
