Enjoy the soothing sound of jazz by local bands and some of South Africa’s favourites, with a great vibe under African skies. What better way is there to end off the month than with awesome music, great food and good friends?
Jazz enthusiasts can once again look forward to an afternoon of superlative jazz music by talented South African artists under summer skies. In celebration of International Jazz Day, Windmill is dedicating the April Jazz on the Lawn event to recognise the special day!
Afripella is a brand new musical group formed in Merafong – the brainchild of 31 year old seasoned musician, David Nhlapo (31). David's professional career in music started in 2010 when he enjoyed an opportunity to visit France and Nigeria on tour with the Soweto Spiritual Singers. This group also appeared on popular gospel shows such as Gospel Gold and Gospel Time, hosted by South African music icon, Dr Rebecca Malope.
The Social Jam Band was formulated as the in-house band for a regular social session then known as the Social Jam Sessions which was hosted and founded by Molefi 'Levos' Phuroe an all-round creative; drummer, DJ and photographer to name a few in the year 2012. The band was the result of an experiment to bring two bands together which Levos was a part of, fusing jazz, experimental and world music together to form an irregular yet pleasant sound.
Sylvester Mazinyane is a Soweto born pianist who works both localy and internationally. He has recorded with a lot of artists like Selaelo Selota, Judith Sephuma, Jimmy Dludlu just to mention a few. He studied at the University of Cape Town and piano being his principal discipline. He has one album released titled Down South. He is working on his second album.
He just recently finished his tour in the Middle East and will be gracing South Africa with his unique style of jazz. He is working with his trio at the moment, and is also part of the Blue Hats Project, a band formed with Bernice Boikanyo.
Food and drinks will be on sale throughout the afternoon. Revellers are encouraged to bring picnic blankets to relax on.
