11 Fun Things To Do at Sun City in Winter
Sun City is one of a few destinations in Southern Africa that enjoys warm, sunny weather all-year-round. Although temperatures take a dip in the cooler months, the resort’s location in the North West province make it ideal for winter holidays and midweek breaks close to Johannesburg. The good news is that, because of its moderate climate, many of Sun City’s activities can be enjoyed irrespective of the weather forecast. Read on to find out more...
Outdoor Activities at Sun City
Go on safari
With the Pilanesberg National Park situated on Sun City’s doorstep, wildlife enthusiasts can experience the best of the region’s wildlife on a guided game drive (or hot air balloon safari) with Mankwe Gametrackers. Excursions depart from the Sun City Welcome Centre and bookings are essential.
Take a treetop tour
As the newest addition to the Valley of Waves, the Chimp & Zee Rope Adventure Park takes swinging to new heights. Similar to ziplining (but on a much milder scale), this kid-friendly obstacle course offers an aerial perspective of Sun City’s inland sea and takes 45 minutes to complete. A minimum height of 1.2 meters is required for this activity.
Note: Valley of Waves will be closed for annual maintenance from 8 July to 5 August 2019.
Get your heart pumping
‘It’s like go-karting on three wheels!’ is how one teenager described the Drift Trikes at Adrenalin Extreme. One of the most exhilarating things to do at Sun City, the drift trikes can reach speeds up to 70km/h and are suitable for kids aged eight years and older. Adrenalin Extreme is also home to The Accelerator, a giant human catapult; Airsoft, a tactical shooting game using plastic BB guns; and Grizzly 4x4 quad-biking. Prices vary according to the activity.
Hang on for your life!
Until recently, Zip 2000 held the record as the world’s fastest, highest and longest zip slide. Reaching speeds of up to 120km/h, this thrilling Sun City zip slide takes up three minutes to complete and ‘departs’ from the Magaliesberg mountain range that borders the resort.
Meet the locals
Undoubtedly one of the most fascinating places to visit at Sun City, the Leeto-Kgolo Village is home to the Bakgatla-Ba-Kgafela tribe – the ‘original people of the Pilanesberg’. The four-hour tour stops off at the Mphebatho Cultural Museum before heading to a local shebeen to sample authentic Bakgatla fare. The excursion fee includes transfers to and from Moruleng Village.
Sun City’s enviable location in the Pilanesberg makes it perfect for exploring its natural surrounds and archaeological treasures. Take a guided walking tour in the adjacent Letsatsing Game Park or view African crocodiles in their natural habitat with a visit to The Crocodile Village. For those looking for something more subdued, the Bird & Tree Walk offers a relaxed and leisurely introduction to the bird and tree species found at the Cascades Forest.
Designed to mimic the remnants of an ancient archaeological discovery, The Maze of the Lost City is the largest permanent maze in the Southern hemisphere and one of the best way to get lost at Sun City. Once you’ve reached the end of the half-acre maze, reward yourself with an ice-cold brew with accompanying Pilanesberg views...
