Concert Venues in Cape Town - The Acoustics of the Grand Arena
There are so many reasons why the Grand Arena at GrandWest tops the list of concert venues in Cape Town. Besides its enviable central position and world-class facilities, when it comes to acoustic music venues in Cape Town, the Grand Arena offers only the best.
As one of the most popular concert venues in Cape Town, the Grand Arena has played host to a staggering number of internationally renowned artists, from musicians such as John Legend and Kylie Minogue to Maroon 5 and Mary J Blige. The Grand Arena not only plays host to the biggest names in the business, but it also showcases family-friendly entertainment such as Cirque du Soleil, Disney On Ice and Scooby Doo, much to the delight of local audiences.
As far as concert venues in Cape Town go, the Grand Arena offers facilities that are far ahead of the curve, and boasts a capacity of 5 084 for seated shows and up to 7 000 for standing room only performances. Yet despite its grand size, the venue retains a feeling of intimacy between the artists on the stage and the crowd that gives its shows a down-to-earth feel. How does it achieve this ambience? Through its state-of-the-art acoustics.
We chatted to the technical coordinator at the Grand Arena, Dave Lombard, to get an insider’s look at the acoustics of one of the best concert venues in Cape Town:
The acoustics were planned from the get-go
During the planning stages of Grand Arena, a big chunk of the resources was dedicated to getting the venue in its best acoustic shape. According to Lombard, “We dedicated a large budget to consultations and acoustic treatment for all flat surfaces of the venue to ensure that sound reflection was kept to an absolute minimum.”
International consultation and local implementation
The Grand Arena has raised the bar on acoustic music venues in Cape Town. The acoustic treatments were recommended by a United States company to rival any concert venues in Cape Town and in accordance with international standards. Though international consultants were key to helping make it one of the top concert venues in Cape Town, all labour and implementation was done locally.
The most recent renovation of the Grand Arena was completed in 2015. Lombard points out the PA system software and hardware as being one of the key focus areas of this latest upgrade. If it is to remain among the top-ranked concert venues in Cape Town, the technology used at Grand Arena needs to keep up with innovations. And it has. Acoustic wall treatments, cylindrical bass traps installed behind stage, at the back of the arena and in the roof are some of the building methods that keep one of top concert venues in Cape Town sounding just right.
“These new upgrades, coupled with the acoustically treated environment, makes for an impressive and pleasant audio experience for all patrons attending events at Grand Arena. We pride ourselves on having one of the best, if not the best sounding venue in the country,” says Lombard.
The Grand Arena is one of the best acoustic music venues Cape Town has to offer, but this description applies not only to the technology and facilities on stage, but also to its supporting venues and facilities. Artists and acts performing at the Grand Arena can enjoy the Start Suite, which is only a few paces away from the stage. In the suite, performers are treated to the best comfort rivalling that of any concert venues in Cape Town. With big armchairs and plush leather sofas, the Start Suites are more than just dressing rooms. Here, artists can do all their pre-performance rituals and relax after their shows.
