DURBAN, 18 June – Kevin Stone, father of SA pro, Brandon Stone proved that talent is not one-dimensional when he walked away with the inaugural SunBet Durban City Pro-Am hosted by Sibaya at Mount Edgecombe Country Club this week.
Stone scored 110 stableford points over the three days to clinch the title. Dane Vosloo from Richards Bay was second on 108 points and Greg Bentley from Kyalami, Jannie Botha from Fourways and Tyran van Lieshout from Johannesburg CC joint third on 107 points.
Stone said he was ecstatic with the result.
“What can I say the course is in good nick,” the Mount Edgecombe resident pro chuckled.
“But to be honest, it’s been a hard three days of competition.
“While I may have emerged victorious, it was equally satisfying, just welcoming fellow PGA teaching pros from all over the country to compete at Mt Edgecombe CC.
“Winning was just a bonus.
“Special thanks to main sponsors, SunBet and Sibaya, and all other contributors to the event.
“Hat’s off also to the organisers, particularly Warren Rudolph and Mickey Hough,” he said.
Leading amateur over the three days was Durban North 12-handicap, Ben So on 114 points. 16-handicap, Matthew Pravda (Wyebank) was second on 110 points and 6-handicap Shaun Carrol (Drakensberg Gardens) third on 108 points.
Sibaya GM Myan Moodley congratulated the winners, adding that they were seriously considering doing the event annually. Hopefully with support from the city, this time.
“This has been a major success, for both pros and amateurs.
“It has certainly brought accolades to Mount Edgecombe, the sponsors, and the city as a whole.
“For this reason, we have little hesitation in supporting the event going forward,” said Moodley.
The event was also preceded by the hosting of the inaugural Sibaya Community Trust Charity Day on Monday, where chairman Vivian Reddy pledged R1,1-m towards the construction of classrooms and an ablution block at the impoverished Saraswathi Primary School in Tongaat.
The Charity Golf event was won by Ashwell Prince, Anthony Seur, Harry Govender, and Teletrack announcer, Deez Dayanand.
