We also saw the emergence of a new selection of rock and pop divas, including Cher, Mariah Carey and Celine Dion, as well as new male rockers, including Robbie Williams, and Ricky Martin. whilst the boy and all-girl groups emerged with a vengeance – with names such as The Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys and Boyz II Men – all dominating the 90s pop charts.
While old school megastars still made their mark with groups such as Genesis and singers like Madonna and Michael Jackson, supergroups like Roxette and REM will never be forgotten. South African music took to the world stage with hits like Brenda Fassie’s Vulindlela, Jonny Clegg’s The Crossing and Vicky Sampson’s African Dream celebrated the birth of a new South Africa in 1994.
