by Anthony Leeming, Chief Executive Sun International

Anthony Leeming

What’s changed for the 39th edition of Africa’s Major?
Anthony: This year we have limited the field to 64 which includes 3 invites and the Sunshine Tour Order of Merit winner. The European Tour has increased the points for the Race to Dubai and the first-place prize money has also been increased to $2.5 million. Even more important however is the enhanced public facility where our guests are sure to be thoroughly entertained.

What does this tournament mean to Sun International?
Anthony: The Nedbank Golf Challenge is our flagship event and really promotes our brand and Sun City not only to the South African market but all over the world. We especially use the event to reward our loyal customers and suppliers and to build relationships with our sponsors, most of which are both customers and suppliers to Sun International. The event however is really bigger than just Sun International as it plays an important part in the South African sporting calendar and to promote South Africa as a destination to the international community.

What makes Sun City the perfect venue for Africa’s Major?
Anthony: Everything! The weather, the hotels, the entertainment, the golf course and most importantly Sun City’s warm and generous hospitality.

What are you most looking forward to at this year's tournament?
Anthony: With the exciting changes to the Rolex Series and to the event itself I’m looking forward to an even more competitive event with another fantastic field. The hospitality and entertainment is sure to be another highlight and I just wish I could take more time off to enjoy everything that is on offer!

Tell us your fondest Nedbank Golf Challenge memory?
Anthony: Sitting on the 9th grandstand, eating ribs, drinking a beer and watching the world’s best play golf in the most magnificent environment. Does it get any better?

What is the best story Gary Player has told you on the 1st tee?
Anthony: Gary has so many stories that it is difficult to narrow it down to just one. Gary’s constant banter with Dale Hayes is always fun and entertaining and really keeps the crowd entertained between tee offs.

How many balls have you lost on the Gary Player Country Club golf course?
Anthony: A few too many!
