Lesotho is known as Africa’s ‘Kingdom in the Sky’ and for good reason. This starkly beautiful, mountainous country provides a fascinating travel detour from the Drakensberg and the Eastern Free State, particularly if entered via Sani Pass -an extreme mountainous pass of long drops, narrow roads and nail biting hairpin bends with names like “Ice Corner" and "Suicide Bend”. Make sure you have a drink at the Highest Pub in Africa, if only to settle your nerves.
Its proud traditional people, distinctive shepherds, endless hiking trails and Basotho ponies are representative of this amazing small country.
Hang out in the capital of Lesotho, Maseru, where you’ll enjoy the slow pace, friendly locals and a memorable stay at either The Maseru Sun or Lesotho Sun, which have festive pool bars that are great for sundowners. A good hike before sunset is up the hill behind the Lesotho Sun – it’s a little rocky but the views are camera-perfect and for souvenirs and curios, visit Basotho Hat for handmade jewellery, ceramics and inspired wire art.
