Sherwin Banda
General Manager: Table Bay Hotel

Sherwin was born and raised in Cape Town where he studied Law at The University of Western Cape and Public Relations at the Academy of Learning Institute. He has spent nearly 15 years in the international hospitality industry working in South Africa, United Kingdom, and until now, Southern California. He is the consummate hotelier, exuding warmth, polish and impeccable style. His experience in the hotel industry includes 7 years with Luxe Hotels in California where he earned the reputation as a world-class operator. Whilst with Luxe Hotels, he was Director of Brand Standards and Training where he was instrumental in developing comprehensive hotel rating standards and raising guest satisfaction scores through comprehensive training initiatives. Sherwin is a graduate of the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute and is dedicated to improving performance through proper employee selection, systems changes, and training.

Vicente Figueroa
General Manager: Monticello Grand Casino and Entertainment World

Vicente joined Sun International in 2008 and has over 18 years of experience working for entertainment related companies in marketing and operations positions. Prior to joining Sun International he worked for Hoyts General Cinema, Funcenter, Arena Santiago, Entertainment Group and SchopDog.

David Kliegl
General Manager: Nigeria

David Kliegl matriculated from Kloof High School in Durban in 1981 and then completed his hotel training with the Gooderson Leisure Group in 1984. David has 25 years' experience in the hotel and leisure industry, both as an operator and as a property developer. He has worked in various countries including Swaziland, Lebanon and China. Prior to moving to Nigeria, David was the General Manager of the Cascades Hotel, Entertainment Centre and Sports & Recreation at Sun International's flagship resort Sun City. David was appointed General Manager of the unit on 1 October 2007.

Lance Rossouw
Area General Manager: Royal Swazi Spa Valley Resort, Swaziland

Lance joined Sun International in 1986 and has over 31 years' experience working in the hospitality industry. He has held various senior managerial positions in South Africa, Botswana and Swaziland. In March 2009, he was appointed Area General Manager of the Royal Swazi Spa Valley Resort in Swaziland.

Lance is of the view that the key aspects of the Royal Swazi Spa Valley Resort are: magnificent landscapes; a friendly Kingdom; highest standard of service and a one-stop shop for all.

Herman (Harry) Swart
General Manager: The Carousel Casino

Herman joined Sun International in 1989 after serving in the military for 6 years. He has over 25 years' experience in Gaming and Hotel Operations and held positions in various roles and properties around Southern Africa. He is a proud South African, with a passionate belief in the global competitive potential of our people, products and services. He is currently the General Manager of The Carousel Casino which opened its doors in 1991 as South Africa's first mega casino catering for a day tripper market. Harry believes that "Business leadership requires at its core, a patriot. That is what elevates one from scampering for effect, to leaving a legacy."

Alec McMath
General Manager: Wild Coast Sun

Alec first joined Sun International (then Southern Sun) in 1979 after having obtained a Higher National Diploma in Hotel and Catering Administration in London. Alec relocated to South Africa for the opening of the Sun City complex. Alec has since held various General Manager positions throughout the Group. Alec is currently situated at the Wild Coast Sun which has recently undergone a major refurbishment with the addition of 150 hotel rooms and a state of the art themed Waterpark.

Brett Hoppe
General Manager: The Boardwalk Casino & Entertainment World and the Fish River Sun

Brett joined Sun International in 1990. The experience he has gained over the past 23 years encompasses a rare blend of operational, gaming, marketing and business acumen, acquired through having held several positions in the group relating to Events and Incentives, International Sales & Marketing and Project Management. His key strengths are his capacity to innovate, inspire and lead people; this combined with relentless energy makes him a formidable force within the hospitality industry. Says Brett "The Boardwalk is an iconic entertainment and tourist attraction in the City of Port Elizabeth."

Clifford Ngakane
General Manager: Meropa Casino and Entertainment World

Clifford joined Sun International in 1989 and has over 24 years' experience in Gaming having started as a Trainee Dealer and rising through the ranks with various positions within Tables and finally ending up as a Tables Manager. Clifford was promoted to General Manager of Meropa from 2003 to 2008 at the age of 32. Clifford was the General Manager of the Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World from 2008- 2013. In 2013 Clifford relocated to Meropa as the General Manager.

Clifford has also held other positions as the Deputy Chairman of the Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism Board, is currently a member of the National Conventions Bureau sub-committee on Marketing with South African Tourism and was a director or Ectour in the Eastern Cape.

Clifford has attended various development programmes which include: Gaming Management Development, Strategic Leadership Development and Executive Development.

Says Clifford about Meropa: "Meropa Casino and Entertainment Meropa Casino and Entertainment World is a Moroccan-style gaming mecca in the heart of the Limpopo Province, South Africa. There are 404 slot machines on the casino floor. The slots are a perfect mix of old and new and all utilise the technologically-advanced, coinless, smart card gaming system. Derek Panaino
General Manager: Carnival City

Derek started his career with Sun International in 1982 as a Slot Machine Technician. He progressed to Slots Manager in 1989 and in this role he was involved in the major refurbishment of Morula Sun Casino, the opening and refurbishment of The Carousel and was part of the opening team of The Lost City and Carnival City (the world's first coinless slot machine operation). He was General Manager of The Carousel from 2004 and Carnival City from 2009. His studies include General Management, Electronics, Mining Engineering and Economics.

Derek gave us more information about the property: "Carnival City is situated in Brakpan, Ekhurhuleni (Johannesburg East) and is differentiated by its Carnival theme – fun, ever changing and exciting entertainment. It boasts of 60 Casino Table games and 1 750 Slot Machines, a Big Top Arena which hosts international and local entertainment artists, a modern gaming arcade, 6 Movie Theaters, Fast Food court and 5 Restaurants."

Peter Guthrie
General Manager: Flamingo Casino

Peter joined Sun International in 1989 as a Slots Guest Service Attendant at the Wild Coast Sun. He has worked in a number of units, namely, Sun City, Naladi Sun, Flamingo Casino and Meropa Casino. He worked his way up the gaming ranks until he was promoted to General Manager at Flamingo Casino in October 2009.

Peter is a firm believer that: "Success begins with a positive attitude, determination and hard work. Don't be afraid of failure, learning from our mistakes, enables us to achieve."

Says Peter about the property he managers: Flamingo Casino is situated along the N12 Phakamile Mabija Road (Old Transvaal Road) in Kimberley. Flamingo Casino got its name from the abundance of these beautiful pink birds that make their home in the nearby Kamfers Dam.

Rudie Putter
General Manager: Kalahari Sands Hotel and Casino

Rudie obtained a B.Comm degree from the University of Stellenbosch in 1992 and started his career in the hospitality industry in Windhoek in 1994 being employed by Sun International as the Hotel Accountant at Kalahari Sands Hotel. He was also part of the opening team for The Table Bay Hotel. Other positions held in Sun International, Tusk Resorts, Peermont Global and Legacy were that of Financial Manager, General Manager, Regional General Manager and Regional Gaming Manager. Rudie assumed the role of General Manager for Kalahari Sands in July 2010.

Rudie believes that: "The key to success is not only to plan but also to sometimes dream!"

Says Rudie about the unit he manages: Kalahari Sands is a City Centre Hotel with a Casino and is particularly well appointed for the business traveler who may need to work from his room.

Riaan Van Rooyen
General Manager: Lesotho Sun Hotel & Casino / Maseru Sun Hotel

B.A. (Psychology), Master's degree in Business Leadership (Unisa)

Riaan originally joined Sun International in 1992. During his tenure here he worked at Sun City, The Carousel and finally Carnival City as General Manager. He left in 2008, managing Regency Casino in Greece, the largest casino in Europe. Riaan rejoined Sun International in November 2013 in his current position.

Ruben Gooranah
Regional General Manager: Meropa, Carousel, Morula, Flamingo, Windmill and Naledi

Ruben joined Sun International in 1988 and has 25 years' experience in the company. Ruben has run many of Sun International Casinos including being Slots Manager at GrandWest and General Manager Morula. More recently, before taking the role of Regional GM in July 2013, Ruben was Business Manager (Gaming) for the Company. Ruben holds a BCOM degree.

Wahida Parker
General Manager: Golden Valley Hotel and Casino

Wahida is an admitted attorney and an internationally accredited mediator and executive coach. Wahida was employed by the Sun international group in 2010 after a successful career in the legal field. Wahida Currently serves on numerous boards including a trusteeship with Old Mutual Superfund and Woolworths employee share trust.

Wahida is listed under Who's Who South Africa and has a keen interest in community development, she also serves as an Executive member of the Worcester Tourism Board and Chairperson of "Omgee Vrouens".

Yasheen Sookdeo
Regional General Manager: Windmill Casino & Naledi Sun

Yasheen joined Sun International in 1997 as Guest Relations Officer dealing specifically with the MVG Loyalty Programme. She held various positions in Marketing and Gaming Promotions.

Yasheen held various positions within the Sun International Group at the following properties: Wild Coast Sun, Carnival City, SugarMill Casino, Meropa Casino & Entertainment World, Flamingo Casino and the Windmill Casino. Yasheen was repositioned from her position as the Marketing Manager at Flamingo Casino to General Manager at Flamingo and transferred in 2009 to Windmill Casino as General Manager. Yasheen holds a BA Degree.

Yasheen believes firmly in a Mahatma Ghandi quote that "A man is but a product of His thoughts. What He thinks He becomes".

Says Yasheen of the unit she manages: the Windmill Casino is the largest leisure investment in the Free State Province which has a decadent style and unique theme and offering. The Windmill Casino boasts superb service and warm hospitality.

The Windmill Casino is currently a level 2 B-BBEE contributor. Management are focusing on growth and development. Yasheen believes that the property achieves its success through its people. She also believes that the property is well positioned as a Responsible Corporate Citizen through its CSI Programme and Environmental Strategy.

Melville Vogel
General Manager: Sibaya Casino

Melville joined the company in 1982 as an in house trainee. Having worked in 6 of the company properties, his first appointment as General Manager was at Fish River Sun in 1993 followed by stints at Wild Coast and the Opening General Manager of Sibaya in 2004. After 19 years' experience as a General Manager he was appointed Regional General Manager in July 2013.

Johan Scheepers
General Manager: The Maslow Hotel

Johan joined Sun International in 2012 and has over 18 years' experience in Hospitality. Prior to joining Sun International, he worked for Radisson hotel group, Abode Hotels and Michael Caines Restaurants as opening General Manager and then in February 2010 he joined Guoman and Thistle Hotels as General Manager of The Kingsley and Thistle Euston respectively where he successfully participated in the repositioning of both these corporate hotels after extensive refurbishment. He was awarded Thistle General Manager of the Year in 2011 for the re-launching of the Thistle Kingsley Hotel in London's West End and also under his leadership the Kingsley was awarded a Hospitality Assured Award for highest scoring best newcomer in 2011 from the Hospitality Institute. Johan is a board member for FEDHASA and Sandton Tourism Association.

The Maslow hotel is Sun Internationals first corporate hotel situated in the financial district of Sandton.

Joanne Selby
General Manager: The Royal Livingstone Hotel & Zambezi Sun

Joanne joined Sun International in 2000 and has over twenty years of hospitality experience. Prior to heading up the team in Zambia, she held Hotel Manager positions at The Royal Livingstone, The Cascades Hotel and The Sun City Hotel. Before joining Sun International, she held various positions at Fancourt Hotel and Country Club, amongst others, and gained practical experience in Scotland and Germany.

Joanne is proudest of the environmentally sensitive and community focused manner in which Sun International Zambia's spectacular location on the edge of the Victoria Falls, a UNESCO world Heritage site, operates.

Joanne lives by an Archbishop Desmond Tutu quote: "We all have a responsibility to learn how to live and develop sustainably in a world of finite resources."

Mike van Vuuren
General Manager: Sun City Resort

Mike has been with Sun International for more than 25 years. He commenced his Sun International career in 1987 as the Financial Manager of Transgames. He subsequently became the Financial Manager in Swaziland and Botswana before being appointed to a Regional Financial Management role, a position he held for 11 years. In 2001 Mike was appointed General Manager, Free State and Lesotho. In 2005 he became the General Manager, Windmill Casino and in 2009 became General Manager of GrandWest Casino before becoming the Managing Executive for Sun City in 2013. Mike holds a BCOM (Hons).

Mervyn Naidoo
General Manager: GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World

Mervyn joined Sun International in 1996 as a Food and Beverage Manager at Mpekweni Sun. He was then promoted to the role of an Operations Manager at The Boardwalk Casino in April 2000 and held this position until his appointment in 2006 to General Manager. From 2008 to June 2013, Mervyn occupied the position of Divisional Director for the group's Gaming South Division assuming responsibility for GrandWest, Golden Valley, The Boardwalk, Lesotho Sun, Maseru Sun and the Monticello Grand Casino and Entertainment World in Santiago, Chile. Mervyn currently occupies the position of General Manager for GrandWest as well as the Director for the region. As a consequence, the Lesotho and Chile operations have been released to other divisions within the group and the Table Bay Hotel incorporated into the Division. Mervyn holds a National Diploma (Hotel Management); a Diploma in Human Resource Management and a Certificate in Strategic Management from the Cornell Hotel School

Mervyn lives by a Mahatma Gandhi quote: "You must be the change you wish to see in the world."

Mervyn believes in: "Driving synergies across the region and focus on delivering value to our stakeholders."

Zolelwa Mzamane
General Manager: Morula Sun

Zolelwa has been in the gaming industry for over 14 years, she has worked her way up to her current position in the Slots and Tables departments. She started her career at Sun International and moved to the then Gold Reef Resorts before tackling new adventures at Tsogo Sun.

Zolelwa rejoins her proverbial "home" with renewed passion and energy; and rounded experience of what's required to be the entertainment destination of choices.

Morula's African flair drives Zolelwa's focus on people and she believes that we all can learn a little from each and every person we encounter.

Derick joined Sun International in 2009 and has over 15 years of experience in the Casino and Hospitality Industry. Derick started his career in the Department of Justice and studied for his B-Iuris degree through UNISA. In 1998 he left the Department of Justice and was employed by Norwegian Cruise Line, based in Miami, Florida. Whilst travelling the world, Derick held various positions within the company and in 2006 became the youngest Hotel Director in the history of the company at age 34.

About the properties he manages, Derick believes that it consists of a landmark business hotel with old-world charm in the heart of Gaborone where you can relax in the abundance of greenery of our beautiful gardens, enjoy the facilities of a modern casino and play 18 holes of golf on the oldest golf course in Botswana by walking 200 meters to the 1st T-box.

Says Derick: "Remember that children, marriage and flower gardens reflect the kind of care they receive!"

Mike van Vuuren
General Manager: Sun City Resort

Mike has been with Sun International for more than 25 years. He commenced his Sun International career in 1987 as the Financial Manager of Transgames. He subsequently became the Financial Manager in Swaziland and Botswana before being appointed to a Regional Financial Management role, a position he held for 11 years. In 2001 Mike was appointed General Manager, Free State and Lesotho.
